How To: Reduce Diaper-Related Problems (without Giving them Up).

Once you start wearing diapers again, you'll be reminded of the reasons that most people stopped.  They smell.  They leak.  The untended diaper pail can devour unwary house guests.   Most of these problems can be worked around.

Table #2
How to Reduce Problems

Do you wish there was a better way to buy diapers? YES Yes
In addition to mail-order and the internet, there are a number of ways to buy diapers.  For example, some thrift stores will carry opened bags of disposables at low prices.

Do you have difficulty wetting in certain situations?

Does your diaper leak frequently?
YES Yes Very few diapers can be soaked to capacity.  Usually they need to be changed when only one to two thirds full.  Otherwise, they will leak.  This is especially true if you are sitting or laying down.

Wearing plastic pants  over disposables will provide a little insurance.

Wearing plastic bloomers DEF over cloth diapers will help when you are seated or laying down. They will reduce the leakage out of the hips and waist.  However, if there is unabsorbed urine, it will leak out the knees when you stand up.

There are also a few things that can be done to reduce the damage of a leak.  Mattresses can be inexpensively protected with a vinyl sheet.  Spray-on Scotch-Guard may also offer some protection to chairs.

Do you have trouble finding a place to change in the city?
YES Yes While the diaper gives some insulation from needing to find a bathroom, eventually it will need to be changed.

Public parks and fast food places are often convenient.  Large and medium-sized parks usually have restrooms that are open during the day.  Public parks are usually shown on road maps.  Fast food restaurants are generally not shown on maps, but are usually nearby.  Certain chains, like McDonalds, have restrooms in every full store.

Covered shopping centers usually have restrooms near the food court, while open-air shopping centers usually don't have a shared restroom.

Do you wish cleaning yourself when changing was easier?
YES Yes One reason why adults are harder to clean up than babies is the amount of body hair.   Shaving is an option, as discussed in VelvetDragons' HowTo on "Defuzzing Your Person."    Other options include electrolysis and laser hair removal.

Do you use cloth diapers and need a better way to store and wash them?
YES Yes If you use cloth diapers regularly, there is no substitute for the dedicated diaper pail and biweekly washings.

However, if you only use a few, there are ways that cloth diapers can be used without a pail and without some other costs and hassles.
